From Flying Cameras to Field Intelligence: How Drones Are Reshaping Offshore
Oil and gas operations rely on offshore platforms and subsea and export pipelines spread across large geographic areas. These assets are often expensive to reach, difficult to inspect and risky for personnel to access, but drones are now demonstrating real value in these contexts. A strong drone program can help organizations improve safety, reduce inspection costs, increase asset visibility and support faster operational decisions. Much more capable than the flying cameras of the past, drones today are extending human capability and transforming what it means to work in oil and gas.

Transforming Inspection and Maintenance
One of the clearest uses of drones in oil and gas is inspection. Traditional inspections may require scaffolding, rope access, confined-space entry, helicopter support, vessel transfers or shutdowns. These methods can be expensive, slow and hazardous. Drones equipped with high-resolution cameras, thermal imaging, LiDAR, gas sensors, ultrasonic thickness measurement or other payloads can inspect assets such as flare stacks, storage tanks (including interiors), pipe racks, roof structures and elevated utilities.
Better imagery is one result of using drones during inspection and maintenance, of course, but the impact extends far beyond that. Using drones reduces personnel exposure to hazardous environments and enables faster inspection cycles. In many cases, a drone can collect data while the asset remains in operation, reducing the need for shutdowns or intrusive access.
For offshore platforms and remote sites, the value is even greater. Every helicopter flight, vessel transfer or remote crew mobilization adds cost, scheduling complexity and risk. A drone mission can reduce or eliminate some of that burden. For example, after Aker Solutions worked with BP to complete the first offshore beyond-visual-line-of-sight drone operation in 2025, the estimated that inspection costs were reduced by 70 percent, and a timeline that typically lasted days was reduced to a matter of hours.

Supporting Emissions Monitoring and Environmental Performance
Oil and gas companies are under increasing pressure to identify, quantify and reduce emissions. Drones can help by carrying gas detection payloads that support methane detection, leak identification and environmental monitoring.
Rather than relying only on fixed sensors, manual inspection rounds or periodic surveys, drones can provide flexible sensing capability across large or difficult-to-access areas. They can be deployed around well sites, compressor stations, tank batteries, pipelines and processing facilities to identify potential leaks or abnormal conditions.
This can support environmental compliance, maintenance prioritization and corporate sustainability commitments. It can also help organizations respond more quickly when a leak or abnormal condition is suspected.
Enhancing Emergency Response
During an incident, information is often the most urgent need. Drones can provide rapid situational awareness without immediately sending personnel into uncertain or hazardous areas.
After a fire, spill, explosion, severe weather event or suspected leak, drones can help responders understand site conditions, identify damaged equipment, assess access routes and monitor changing hazards. Thermal imagery may help identify hot spots. Gas sensors may help identify areas of concern. Aerial imagery can support coordination between operations, emergency response, engineering and management teams. This helps provide better information to emergency responders earlier.
In regions such as the Gulf of America (Gulf of Mexico), where hurricane evacuations are a recurring part of operations, drones can be deployed remotely after a storm to assess site conditions before workers are remobilized. This early inspection capability helps operators identify damage, access constraints, flooding, leaks or other hazards while reducing the need to send personnel back into potentially unsafe areas.
Building Better Digital Twins and Asset Records
Drone data is increasingly valuable because it can feed digital twins, asset management systems, GIS platforms and maintenance workflows. High-resolution imagery, photogrammetry, and LiDAR scans can create updated spatial models of facilities and infrastructure. For oil and gas companies, this is especially useful because asset records are often incomplete, outdated or fragmented across projects, contractors and systems. Drone data can help validate what is installed in the field.
Engineers can use current imagery to plan modifications. Inspectors can compare conditions over time. Maintenance teams can attach findings to specific assets. Remote experts can review conditions without traveling to site. Over time, the drone becomes less of a flying camera and more of a mobile data collection platform.
Moving Toward Autonomous Operations
The next stage is autonomy. Drones are increasingly being paired with docking stations, automated flight plans, edge analytics and AI-enabled defect detection. In the future, drones may launch automatically from offshore platforms, pipeline hubs, refineries or remote production sites to perform scheduled inspection rounds. They may identify corrosion, missing insulation, abnormal heat signatures, vegetation encroachment, security anomalies or possible leaks. Data may be sent directly into maintenance, asset management or operational systems.
What Organizations Should Consider Before Deploying Drones
The promise of drones is significant, but a successful program requires clear operational purpose, safety planning, cybersecurity controls, data governance, regulatory awareness and workforce preparation. Oil and gas companies must do more than simply buy equipment and train pilots.
The starting point should be the business problem. Which inspections are costly, risky, slow or inconsistent? Which assets are difficult to access? What data is needed, and how will drone findings trigger action?
Regulatory and safety requirements must also be understood before deployment. Drone operations may be affected by aviation rules, site restrictions, hazardous area controls, weather limits, emergency procedures, permit-to-work processes and pilot competency requirements. The drone program should fit seamlessly into the existing safety management system.
Cybersecurity should be a part of the conversation from the beginning. Industrial drones capture sensitive infrastructure data, transmit information wirelessly, connect to cloud services and may interface with enterprise or operational systems. Secure firmware, encrypted communications, identity management, network segmentation, vendor controls and clear data-sharing rules are essential. Given the operational role drones now play, and the potential real-world consequences of a cybersecurity incident, the ISA/IEC 62443 series provides a strong foundation for managing their security within the broader OT environment.
Finally, organizations must plan how drone data will be stored, tagged, reviewed, retained, protected and integrated into CMMS, EAM, GIS, digital twin or inspection systems. Drones create value only when their findings are connected to maintenance, engineering and operational decisions. Human expertise becomes even more critical in partnership with drones and their data.
Drones as Operational Intelligence
Drones are transforming oil and gas operations because they improve visibility across assets that are hazardous, remote, elevated, dispersed or expensive to access. They reduce the need for some high-risk inspections, accelerate condition assessment, support emissions monitoring, improve emergency response and contribute to digital twins and remote operations.
Drone use is not a numbers game. Organizations with the most drones will not necessarily be the ones deriving the most value from their drone programs. Instead, the most successful organizations will deploy drones with clear business objectives, strong safety controls, cybersecurity discipline, data governance, regulatory awareness and integration into maintenance and operational workflows.
It is long past time to stop thinking about drones exclusively in terms of aerial photography. The real opportunity right now is in turning drones into a structured source of field intelligence for safer, more resilient and more efficient oil and gas operations.
