Advanced Propulsion and Control for Modern Fleet Operations
For modern workboats, police vessels, fire-rescue craft, and pilot boats, mission success relies on split-second responsiveness, uncompromising reliability, and precise handling in high-stakes environments. As operational requirements evolve, vessel operators increasingly seek propulsion solutions designed for efficient operation, flexible integration and high power output. From heavy-duty thrusters designed for massive bollard pulls to intelligent control systems tailored for complex maneuvers and firefighting missions, ZF's engineering innovations are setting new benchmarks for vessels.
Introducing the ZF AT 110 Thruster
Workboats and other service craft need marine equipment that delivers raw power without complicating the build. In support of this, ZF has developed its largest azimuth thruster to date: the ZF AT 110.
Built to handle engine outputs of up to 3,950 hp, the AT 110 is tailor-made for heavier, hard-working vessels like modern harbor tugs and heavy-duty patrol boats. For operators, this translates to increased bollard pull specifications up to 100 tons, providing the output needed to safely guide and maneuver much larger vessels in dynamic-conditions. Compare the power range of the AT 110 to entire the ZF AT thruster series:
The revised system incorporates an optimized nozzle and propeller design intended to support efficient thrust generation under the specified operating conditions.
ZF designed the AT 110 with both the shipbuilder and operator in mind, with a highly compact footprint. ZF’s lubrication system uses targeted oil delivery to critical components instead of a fully oil-filled upper housing. The targeted lubrication concept reduces the oil volume required in the specified housing configuration.
Precision Control: AutoTroll 2 and Dynamic Positioning
Maneuvering large or specialized vessels in congested quarters requires precision control. ZF’s next-generation AutoTroll 2 control system is engineered specifically to meet this challenge, offering enhanced closed-loop control for faster, more accurate adjustments of propeller speed during delicate operations like docking and dynamic positioning (DP).
AutoTroll 2 gives operators the ability to select from five distinct shifting characteristics. These range from ultra-smooth responses to dynamic, direct behaviors. Seamlessly combining conventional and DP trolling modes into a single framework, the system automatically adjusts parameters such as maximum allowable engine speed to protect drivetrain components from undue stress.
AutoTroll Firefighting: Persistent Command in Emergencies
For municipal fireboats and emergency response vessels, maintaining position while operating massive fire monitors under stressful conditions is a real-world challenge. To solve this, ZF has introduced an optional AutoTroll Firefighting function designed specifically for transmissions.
This specialized feature incorporates an advanced slipping clutch design capable of maximum engine speeds, utilized to drive high-capacity fire monitor pumps, without transferring that full speed directly to the propeller. As a result, fireboats can pump thousands of gallons per minute while retaining exact position and maneuvering, even under extreme conditions. Coupled with specialized cooling and thermal monitoring sensors, the system prevents overheating during prolonged emergency responses, maximizing uptime and crew safety.
Proven Partnerships: Mission-Ready Performance
ZF is trusted by leading builders of specialized commercial craft. Industry leaders like MetalCraft Marine regularly integrate robust ZF and compatible propulsion solutions into their legendary high-speed fireboats and workboats – including four ZF 665 transmissions aboard their FireStorm 70 class vessels. MetalCraft relies on drivetrain technologies that can handle the intense, heavy gear-loads associated with high-capacity waterjets, massive fire monitors, and demanding multi-mission profiles without sacrificing hull efficiency or speed.
Customer Care and Upcoming Events
ZF further stands out through comprehensive support options, including extended marine warranties. Additionally, the ZF Marine mobile service app and the dealer network and 24/7 hotline (1-833-ZF-WRENCH) provide access to service support and parts assistance in covered markets, helping operators address service needs.
Those looking to learn more about these latest advancements are encouraged to stop by ZF’s booths at the upcoming Pacific Marine Expo and the International WorkBoat Show later this year.
